Registration required to download

12 November 2009 | announcement | Tags: ,

I know a lot of people don’t like registering to download programs (even free ones), but in this case I would like people to register on the site with a valid email address so that I can notify users of new upgrades, security fixes, etc. I’ve had several support requests to fix items that have already been addressed in a newer version than they are running but they did not know a newer version had been available. Seriously, how often does one check the download page to see if a new version is available? Not too often. So, please register to help us help you get the most out of our products. If you strongly disagree with not registering you can download the apps at google code as per usual, that way we’re not too confining.

In the near future Kontrollbase will feature a self-update option which will notify you of available updates when you login. Expect that to generally get the news out to users in a more efficient manner. In the meantime there’s news announcements on the bottom pane of the Kontrollbase interface so please do watch that area for new releases and bug fixes.

Blame companies who reckon spamming is a neat idea.
Once you register, you get a barrage of crap.

I do appreciate the problem though… no magic answers.

I totally agree with you on the spam fest that is common with a lot of companies. However this registration will only be used to inform users that there is a new version or security issue. Also, similarly to how the MySQL downloads you have the option of logging in and downloading or just ‘take me to the downloads’ – although in this case the user has to download from google code. But like you said, no perfect method.

RSS feeds, people who are interested about updates and notifications will be subscribed and check them at their leisure.
